CHAPTER NINETEEN

Finn inhaled sharply as an icy realization hit him. He was more afraid now than before – not for him, but for the beautiful, guileless woman sitting across from him. Did she realize the danger she was in? She held all Jackman’s operations in her head. Past and present. Most valuable asset was an understatement. There was no way Jackman led a government-sanctioned organization. Law enforcement agencies didn’t buy 11-year-old Russian girls and put them to work, didn’t have hidden compounds, didn’t keep their most important information in the extraordinary memory of a young woman. Which meant that Jackman’s was a criminal organization.

Finn marvelled at the enterprise, and this Jackman. It was both brilliant and arrogant to use a genius as his data bank. Brilliant because if the organization was compromised, there was no paper trail and no evidence. He and his operatives could never be convicted unless the authorities knew about Nika. And would that mean Nika’s life was forfeited should the organization be compromised? Jackman couldn’t have her fall into the hands of the law any more than the Russians.

But it was also arrogant to think that it wasn’t a huge vulnerability. Because a single person held all his secrets. If Jackman could plant his people into other criminal or even crime-fighting organizations, then so could those organizations. The promise of power and money is a huge temptation for anyone. And it sounded like every operative worked with Nika, so they knew as much about her as she knew about them. How could Jackman keep her a secret? It was just a matter of time and patience for Jackman’s enemies to snatch Nika. And that time had presented itself when Nika took her unsanctioned vacation.

Finn wasn’t sure what to think of himself – he’d bullied her into telling him her secrets. Knowing them could get him killed, but there was a target on his back already. If not the Russians, then Jackman. No one was going to stop and ask him what he knew before shooting him. It didn’t work that way. But he wasn’t worried about his own life, though despair raged deep in his gut at the thought of not having more time with Nika. He needed to keep her safe. Not for that son-of-a-bitch, Jackman. But for her sake. The Russian’s would go to great lengths to get the information from Nika. Short of killing her, there wasn’t much they wouldn’t do.

This thought made him angry and with that anger came that primal urge to dominate her. As he looked across the couch at Nika, all he wanted to do was to pull her to him and kiss her deeply and forcibly. What the fuck was wrong with him? Women didn’t make him lose his cool the way Nika did – of course they didn’t. But she was irresistible – sitting cross-legged at the opposite end of the couch, almost all the buttons opened on his shirt, her body exposed and hidden at the same time.
